The hard lives of Xávega fishermen

Probably the hardest thing I had come across to shoot. 11h00, extremely hard light, fishermen’s faces in the shadows because of their caps, frustration. Here’s a small set, documenting the hard art of xávega fishing.
This art consists in facing the rough sea in wooden boats and go as far as they can to lay the nets, leaving  an end on the beach, so it can be pulled by tractors.
It’s still very much alive in my memory when they used bulls and cows to pull the nets from the Atlantic, in an almost herculean effort against physical abilities. Even now, it’s incredible how they do it.
Hard lives.
